BAMTEC® is a trademark and is an abbreviation of Bewehrungs-Abbund-Maschinen-Technologie (reinforcement joining machine technology).

BAMTEC® is a new and particularly economic method for the planning, manufacturing, and installation of plane reinforcements for concrete floors and R/C slabs with any type of bedding.

Instead of the conventional steel mesh, BAMTEC®-elements are used for the reinforcement of concrete floors or R/C slabs. They consist of uniaxially arranged round steel bars, connected by transverse supporting strips to form an installation unit.

BAMTEC® is based on the round steel bar plane reinforcement method which is widely used in reinforced concrete construction; however, it utilizes all the possibilities of data processing systems at the consulting engineers as well as in the automatically manufacturing machines of the bending shops.

We combine a particular quality of the statics designer's performance with the term BAMTEC®. A performance that goes beyond the conventional way of thinking.

In our opinion, the statics designer has to produce results that meet the manufacturing requirements much more than it has been the case up to now in reinforced steel construction. Just in this respect, the computer with FEM and CAD provides possibilities which should be utilized.

When using BAMTEC®, the statics designer will become the operations scheduling engineer for the contractor.

We confer licenses to consulting engineers and reinforcement bending shops for the use of the patent BAMTEC®. We promote the market introduction of the bending shop. We train and support consulting engineers by expert workshops, technical literature, hotline, and the operation of this website.

How is BAMTEC® applied?

In the conventional method for the reinforcement of concrete floors, simple reinforcing elements such as round steel bars or steel mesh are determined individually in the plan, they are prepared individually in the bending shop, itemized, delivered, and then installed piece by piece on site by mounting crews.

The BAMTEC®-element system will essentially modify this method. No itemized individual bars or meshes will be supplied to the site any longer. Complete, rolled-up reinforcement layers are applied instead so to speak tailor-made reinforcing elements.

A separate BAMTEC®-element is constructed, produced, delivered and installed for either of the two reinforcement directions.

These BAMTEC®-elements are in most cases rolled out rectangular to each other. They consist of parallel round steel bars which are combined to one unit by means of transverse mounting strips. This means that in the lower and upper reinforcement layer two rolls each, i.e. in total four rolls are required.

So with our BAMTEC®-elements we deliver custom-made suits to the site.

The reinforcement layers do not consist of standard rolls but are specifically manufactured for the respective outline and stress.

For manufacturing and transport reasons, the maximum width of the BAMTEC®-elements is limited to 15 meters. The weight of one roll must not exceed 1.2 to 1.4 tons.

Thus it is ensured that the BAMTEC®-element can be rolled out by two workers.

The length of the BAMTEC®-element results from the layout and the admissible weight. It can be 25 meters and more.

The upper steels of ceiling joist reinforcements, the lower reinforcements of wall disks, as well as the framings for recesses can be integrated in the BAMTEC®-elements.

BAMTEC® may also be used for semi-prefabricated or composite slabs, but for the upper layer only.

The installation of the reinforcement requires about 10-20 percent of the time required for conventional steel installation.

How are BAMTEC® plane reinforcements dimensioned and designed?

The starting point is a finite element calculation. Based on the outlines, afterwords the engineer must define the geometry of the BAMTEC®-elements.

By means specially developed software a reinforcement proposal can then be prepared fully automatically for all the BAMTEC®-elements.

That proposal may be elaborated further by hand, if necessary. The preparation of the reinforcement drawings will then be possible within a fraction of the previously required working time.

Three types of plans are prepared:

  • For the reinforcement bending shop, the individual BAMTEC®-elements with the pertaining steel lists are shown on the manufacturing plans They serve to control the BAMTEC® reinforcing carpet welding unit, a semiautomatic or fully automatic machine to fabricate the carpets. The data can be directly transferred via telephone connection from the engineering firm to the reinforcement bending shop (just-in-time production) or fed into the BAMTEC®-robot by floppy disk.
  • For the building site, an Rollout-plan is drawn. It shows which carpet is placed where, and in which direction it must be rolled out.
  • For the verification engineer and for reinforcement acceptance, an overview plan is prepared which includes all the steels of a reinforcement layer.
It is common knowledge that steel mesh reinforcements require a difficult combinatorial proceeding of the engineering draftsman. The two reinforcement directions must be taken into consideration at the same time.

Such proceeding cannot be computerized in any useful way. Moreover, the processing of rigid mesh can hardly be rationalized.

With BAMTEC®, however, the automatic preparation of reinforcement plans is a simple mathematical solution.

Our method splits the two-dimensional reinforcement problem up into two uni-dimensional reinforcement calculations. The reinforcements of the X and Y directions can be determined separately.

Our method splits the two-dimensional reinforcement problem up into two uni-dimensional reinforcement calculations. The reinforcements of the X and Y directions can be determined separately.

For this, the floor is theoretically cut into strips. For each strip the reinforcement that actually is to build in is determined locally.

The individual bars can thus be graduated exactly according to the As-contour lines of the FEM calculation. Due to the large BAMTEC®-elements, overlaps are almost completely omitted. Each of the parallel bars may have an other diameter, other length, and other distance than the previous one.

In comparison to conventional steel mesh reinforcements, savings between 20 and 50 % will thus be possible.

Fully Automatic Machine

Besides reinforcement savings, the fully automatic manufacturing of the BAMTEC® reinforcement is much interesting.

The data of the finished plane reinforcement are transferred to the bendin shop by means of floppy disk or telephone connection.

There, the reinforcement joining machine is controlled by those data. The BAMTEC® reinforcement is manufactured fully automatically. Bars up to diameters of 14 (16) mm are processed from the coil

What must be taken into consideration when using BAMTEC® ?

When designing with BAMTEC®, care must be taken that the BAMTEC®-elements can be rolled out without any obstacles.

Support connections must be made with socket joints or sliding sleeves. Often it is possible to roll out the BAMTEC®-elements between the supports. Suspension reinforcements must be installed angularly later on. Ceiling joist stirrups must be open, to be completed subsequently by connection rebars.

Another requirement is, for example, that the chimney does not yet project.

The BAMTEC®-Competence Center offers training courses in which the experiences gained with BAMTEC® are passed on. Also, events will take place for the exchange of experiences and the information about new developments.

Summary:

BAMTEC® is a new method for the installation of round bar plane reinforcement into the formwork and links the work of the statics designer with the manufacturing of the reinforcement in the bending shop by means of a fully automatic machine.

For many consulting engineers, BAMTEC® will be a key to future.

In principle, fully automatic reinforcement prefabrications will come anyway. In the next few years, the industry will be subject to such a heavy rationalization pressure that this development will be inevitable.

We meet all requirements like DIN, or Eurocode, respectively.
